What to Wear for Your Photography Session: A Simple Guide
One of the most common questions I get from clients is, “What should we wear for our session?” I understand—it can feel overwhelming trying to figure out how to coordinate everyone while also making sure you feel comfortable and confident. So, I’m here to make it easier for you.
I’ve been a portrait photographer for almost a decade, and I’ve seen what works beautifully in photos and what can take away from the magic of the moment. Whether you're preparing for family portraits, a senior session, or even newborn photos, this guide will walk you through some simple tips to make sure you feel your best in front of the camera!
1. Start with Your Location in Mind
The first step in picking outfits is to consider where your session will take place. If we’re shooting outdoors in a park with lush greenery (like Leita Thompson Memorial Park), softer, earthy tones—think creams, tans, soft blues, and muted greens—will harmonize with the setting.
If we’re in an urban environment, something bold like jewel tones (deep reds, emeralds, navy) will pop against the city backdrop.
For indoor sessions, especially those with newborns, soft and neutral colors create a timeless, serene feel.
2. Coordinate, Don’t Match
Gone are the days when everyone had to wear the exact same outfit! Instead, think about coordinating your colors. Choose a palette of 3-4 colors that work well together and allow each family member to express their own style within that range. For example, if one person is wearing a patterned shirt, pull colors from that pattern to inspire the other outfits. It helps bring cohesion without feeling “too matchy.”
For a family session, imagine dad in a navy button up shirt, mom in a soft beige dress, one child in light blue, and another in a cozy plaid that pulls in all those colors. This creates a beautiful flow without looking forced.
3. Comfort Is Key
The most important part of your wardrobe is that you feel comfortable. This doesn’t mean you need to wear sweats, but if you’re fidgeting with a dress or the kids are unhappy in itchy clothes, it will show in the photos. Choose outfits that allow you to move, sit, play, and feel like yourself. After all, the best photos happen when you feel relaxed and confident!
4. Textures and Layers Add Depth
In photos, texture can make all the difference. Think of chunky knit sweaters, lace details, or even a leather jacket for an edgy look. Adding layers like scarves, cardigans, or jackets gives you options to change up the look during the session without a full wardrobe change.
For newborn sessions, light and airy fabrics like cotton or linen can add a soft, tender vibe that matches the moment’s emotions.
5. Keep Patterns Minimal
While patterns can be fun, they can also be distracting if overdone. My advice is to have one person wear a subtle pattern while the others wear solids or simpler designs. This keeps the focus on your beautiful faces and the connection between you all rather than drawing the eye to busy clothing. If your child has a favorite patterned outfit, that’s great—just tone down the rest of the group’s outfits to balance it out.
6. Footwear Matters
This is something that often gets overlooked, but shoes can make or break a look! For family sessions, aim for clean, neutral shoes. Avoid neon sneakers or shoes with large logos, as they can stand out in an unwanted way. If your session is more casual (perhaps at the beach), going barefoot can be a lovely option.
7. Accessorize Thoughtfully
Accessories can be a fun way to add a personal touch to your outfit, whether it’s a statement necklace, a hat, or a fun belt. Just be mindful of keeping them minimal so they don’t distract from your face or the overall feel of the photo. Also, avoid anything too trendy—remember, we’re aiming for timeless photos that you’ll cherish for years to come.
8. Plan Ahead
Lay out your outfits ahead of time and take a step back to see how they look together. Doing this a few days before your session allows you to make any last-minute changes without the stress of scrambling at the last minute.
My Final Thoughts:
When you look back on your photos, I want you to see the love, joy, and connection you share with your family. The outfits should enhance that, not distract from it. Above all, wear what makes you feel you—your personalities are what will shine through in the photos, and that's what truly matters.
If you ever have any questions or need help putting outfits together, I’m just a text or email away! I want your session to be fun, relaxed, and an experience you enjoy from start to finish. I can’t wait to capture these special moments for you!
